Teaser for SEEING BLACK...

A small UNEDITED excerpt of SEEING BLACK (See Red #2):

Without another word Jillian hung up and took a deep breath before standing up and turning around. But, as soon as she stood and turned, she crashed right into a solid rock-hard wall.
Umph!
Clutching her heart she said, “now that we’re together, I’d hoped you would stop scaring me. You’re like a ninja. My God, one day I’m going to have a heart attack, I just know it.”
“Who was that?” Alexander asked. His jaw set tightly and his arms crossed.
She was prepared to lie but the look of concern plastered on his face and the love that seeped from his pores. . . well, she just couldn’t do it. “It was Rocco,” she admitted.
“I figured as much.”
“I don’t want you to see him Jillian.”
“I don’t like myself like this.” She waved her arms around. “Crouching down, whispering, keeping secrets, all to avoid you acting all crazy possessive.”
“It’s not possessive. It’s protective.”
“I know it is and I appreciate your concern. I really do. One of the reasons I love you so much is because of your crazy-protectiveness. It reminds me that I’m not alone in this world anymore. But, I’m still the same Jillian. The independent woman that has to be able to make her own decisions and you’re just going to have to trust my judgment from time to time.” She reached forward and placed her palms on his chest. “He’s my father. I want to hear him out. I’d like to get to know him. I made plans to have breakfast with him on Sunday.”
“Fine, we’ll go Sunday but---“
“No. no. no. We, “ She moved her fingers back and forth between them, “will not be going to breakfast. I will be going to breakfast. Alone. Listen, Xander. I appreciate your concern. I really do. I’ve been on my own for a long time. It’s going to take some time for me, and patience on your part, to get used to being accountable to someone else. But, I also need my independence. I can’t be smothered and you love to smother. It’s your thing,” She air-quoted the word ‘thing’. “I have things I want to understand about myself and he’s the only one that can help me. I would like to go on my own. Please. I’ll give you the address so that you know where I’ll be. I will even give myself a time limit. Three hours. If I’m not back within three hours you can call the police or break down the door—whatever a caveman does to get his woman back.” She smiled, trying to lighten the tension.
“I like that. My woman. I like when you say that. You are my woman. Fucking finally!”
Jill laughed. “Seriously? Is that all you got out of my entire little speech?”
“No, I also got that you need some independence. So, fine, I’ll lay off. But, you have two hours. Okay?” He held out two fingers. “If you will be longer than that, you’ll call me?”
“Of course.”
“I don’t like this, Jill.”
“I know but thank you for understanding, Xander.” She reached up and pulled his head down to meet her lips and planted a soft gentle open-mouthed kiss on his lips and in that kiss they both forgot all about Rocco or any impending problems that awaited them.

“Listen, she just vanished! You have to do something!” Alexander yelled into the phone at Officer Flynn, the police officer assigned to the missing person case.

“Son, we are doing everything we can. There are no signs of her. We’ve looked everywhere for her.”

“I’m telling you, that son of a bitch, Rocco Taylor has her. I’m even ruling out that asshole Professor, Paul Black.”

“Listen, Alex, I’ve already explained to you that I can’t just barge into a man like Rocco Taylor’s home and accuse him of abducting your girlfriend. His daughter, for Christ sake!”

“Why the fuck not?”

“You need to calm down.”

“Don’t tell me to calm down! It’s been months and there has been absolutely no trace of her. You don’t know her; she wouldn’t just disappear without telling a person. She wouldn’t drop out of school, leave all her belongings. It’s as if she fell off the face of the planet.”

“Okay Alex, I will speak with the Chief, and see how we can approach Taylor. It will not be easy. He’s rich. He’s powerful. Every Goddamn attorney in Texas will be pissing their pants to represent him if word gets out that the Austin Police Department even so much as suggested he may have his daughter imprisoned or is somehow connected to her abrupt disappearance. I’m going to be honest with you, son, it’s far-fetched and ridiculous and I don’t think it’ll fly. But, I don’t like that son of a bitch, and because of that, I’m going to see what I can do to help you. Give me a week, okay?”

“Thank you Officer. My brother and I really appreciate it. She’s all we have. Please, anything you find let me know.”

“I will.” There was a click and the line disconnected.

Alexander turned off his phone and hurled it across the room. He slid down to the floor, the wall to his back. He ran his fingers through his long tousled hair and then rubbed his face with his hand. He hadn’t bothered to shave or cut his hair in months. He let his head fall back and it bumped against the wall. He closed his eyes and prayed for the tenth time that day that Jillian would call or that he would somehow hear something.

Knock knock

Alexander kept his eyes locked on the ceiling fan. Round and round and round. . .
He heard the door to his room open.

“Hey.” Oliver sat down on the floor next to Alexander.
“I heard you yelling at Flynn.” Alexander didn’t reply. Oliver settled more comfortably on the floor and didn’t speak for some time.

“She’s not dead.” Alexander said, unconvincingly and still looking up at the fan.

Oliver didn’t reply.

“Did you hear me Oliver?” Alexander turned his face towards his brother. “She is not dead!”  Oliver and Alexander looked at each other; Oliver still did not say anything.
“Say something damn it!” Alexander grabbed the lapel of Oliver’s grey shirt, and shook him. “She. Is. Not. Dead!” He fisted the shirt tighter as tears flooded Alexander’s eyes and collapsed into Oliver’s chest.. “Fuck! Oliver. Say something! Tell me she’s not dead! Tell me!” Alexander yelled, as the tears flowed freely down his face. He had held it together now for months. This was the breaking point.

Oliver reached for his brother and embraced him, tightly. Alexander sobbed loudly and uncontrollably in his brother’s arms. . . for the first since. . .well, for the first time ever. Oliver just let him cry. He didn’t say a single word.

“…Jill is not dead.” His voice faltered. “She’ll be back.” Alexander whispered. He pleaded. He prayed. But deep down, he knew that after all these months without a single word from her . . .things were looking bleak.
“. . .she’ll be back. . .” He wasn’t sure if he was trying to convince Oliver or himself.
